so some of us were talking about the 'instant sleeve' in another thread (the concept of 'instant sleeve' meaning a person has an either blank or minimally tattooed arm and then goes in and gets an entire sleeve in one fell swoop, allowing a person to go from zero to bad-ass in 3.5 seconds (or 3.5 sittings, to be technical about it) but anyway, is it really just a matter of being immediately bad-ass? should a sleeve be earned ('earned' meaning getting a sleeve the old-fashioned way, getting tattoos slowly but surely, matching them all up into a sleeve with somewhat common subject matter and finally a conjoining background)? or should it be a well-thought-out, singular, 'complete' piece? (o shit i said 'piece there! lol!)
another variable...
does the style and subject matter contribute to said 'instant' or 'earned' sleeve? for example, a trad-american style sleeve could very easily be done over years of piecing together, considering its aestetic styling. however, a japanese style sleeve, with swooping backgrounds and its tendency to wrap around an arm rather than simply be a 'one point' design lends itself very well to 'instant sleeve' theory. (although i have seen pieced-together trad-jap sleeves that look great, any good tattooer can do it, although trad-jap instant sleeves look sick)
anyway...
what do you think?
