Our Favorite Looks From the Met Gala

There's no better night of the year to gaze in awe at our favorite stars

Historically, museums are usually pretty strapped for cash. It may not appear like it on the surface, but running an art museum is an incredibly expensive endeavor. One easy way to raise some money is to throw a fundraiser, like that one time I got to stay overnight at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium for a couple hundred bucks. But that fundraiser, like millions of others across the country, flew under the radar of the news media. The genius of the Met Gala is that for one night every person in entertainment turns their eyes to New York to see exactly what their favorite star is going to show up in. 

The Gala started back in 1948 as a way to fund the newly formed Costume Institute at the museum. It was a pretty low-key affair at the time, but over the years it started to snowball into the cultural bonanza it has become today. Scoring an invite is nearly impossible and people are willing to pay almost anything to be in that crowd. This year, “almost anything” translated to $50,000 per ticket. Last year the Met Gala raised over $2.6 million. If that keeps the prices down so I can afford to go get lost in the majesty of the Temple of Dendur or stare at Jackson Pollock’s “Autumn Rhythm: Number 30” until my eyes get crossed, then that means this is a bit of celebrity worship I can get behind. 

This year’s theme was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” and the outfits didn’t disappoint. Here’s a collection of our personal favorite outfits.
