When it comes to predators, no creature in North America or Eurasia has the swagger of the wolf. Wolves are the largest canines on these continents and are comprised of approximately 38 different species. They’re a part of the Canis genus, which also includes dogs, coyotes and jackals. Wolves have adapted to participate in cooperative game hunting and they travel in nuclear familiars consisting of a mated pair and their offspring. In 2003, the total world wolf population was estimated to be approximately 300,000—making them qualify for the least concerned category in regards to conservation status.

Wolves have been a part of folklore and mythology for centuries, with stories coming from the Ancient Greeks, Buddhism, Hinduism and many indigenous groups. There are countless fairy tales, most of which originated in Europe, that depict wolves—including “The Three Little Pigs,” “Little Red Riding Hood” and “The Boy Who Cried Wolf.” In many of these stories, wolves are cast as the villains, but in actuality, wolf attacks on humans are quite rare as wolves chose to live far away from humans. Some have been able to domesticate wolves and wolf-hybrids as exotic pets, however, this is an extremely difficult task and it’s illegal to have a purebred wolf as a pet in the United States.
