The human race tends to focus on Earthly problems (often to a fault) and forgets that there are approximately 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets in our universe—eight alone in our solar system. Our solar system was formed 4.6 billion years ago and is comprised of eight celestial objects (planets) orbiting our Sun—Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and it’s the smallest planet orbiting our Sun. It takes approximately 87.97 Earth days to orbit the Sun, the shortest of any planet in our solar system. Venus is the second closest planet to the Sun and from Earth, it’s the second brightest natural object in the night sky (after our Moon). Venus orbits the Sun in approximately 224.7 Earth days, but oddly only rotates on it’s own axis every every 243 Earth days.

Our planet, Earth, is the third planet from the Sun and it’s the only known astronomical object in our solar system to harbor life. The Earth orbits the Sun every 365 days and spins on it’s own axis every 24-hours. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and it’s known as the Red Planet for the prevalence of iron oxide on its surface. It takes 687 Earth days for Mars to orbit around the Sun.

The fifth planet in our solar system is Jupiter and it’s by far the largest planet out of the bunch. It takes Jupiter approximately 12 Earth years to orbit the Sun. After Jupiter, we have Saturn, a planet that’s known for it’s ring system that’s primarily composed of ice particles. It takes Saturn approximately 29 Earth years to orbit the Sun.

Next comes Uranus, which is known for having the coldest planetary atmosphere with a minimum temperature of −371 °F. It takes around 84 Earth years for Uranus to orbit the Sun. Last, but not least, we have Neptune, which is known for being the densest gas planet in our solar system. It takes Neptune a whopping 165 years to orbit the Sun.

Up until 2006, Pluto was classified as a planet within our solar system, however, it’s since been demoted to a dwarf planet after the discovery of similarly sized objects within the Kuiper belt. If included in the solar system, it would be the smallest planet of them all and take a staggering 248 years to orbit the Sun.
