There’s No Planet B, Celebrate Earth Day with Ink
These Earth tattoos are out of this world
For the past 50 years, we’ve celebrated Earth Day on April 22nd and now, the Earth needs us more than ever. Earth Day was first proposed by peace activist John McConnell at the 1969 UNESCO conference in San Francisco and was intended to be celebrated on March 21st, 1970, the first day of Spring. However a month later, Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson founded a separate Earth Day on April 22nd, after being inspired by the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, which is the day we now associate with the holiday.
Initially, Earth Day was exclusively a US holiday, but in 1990 it was taken global and introduced to 141 other nations. Today, millions of people around the world observe Earth Day and spread the message of caring for the planet in different ways. Growing up, I can remember spending Earth Day with my dad, picking up trash on the side of the road. In 2017, we saw the first March for Science rally in Washington, DC, with people around the world protesting the misrepresentation of science, as it pertains to climate change, in world politics—particularly when it came to Donald Trump’s administration.
Earth Day 2020 is the holiday’s 50th anniversary and is slated to be one of the biggest global environmental events yet. In honor of the upcoming holiday, we’re celebrating by sharing some of our favorite examples of Earth tattoos, which showcase the beauty of the planet we’d like to protect.
