50 Impressive Internet Tattoos
Cue the dial-up modem.
It’s hard to imagine what life would be like without the internet. The internet shapes so many aspect of our lives—from our jobs to our dating practices to our entertainment to ordering a pizza. There are no limits to how you can use the internet and it will only continue to take a hold of the human race going forward.
The origins of the internet date back to the 1960s with the United States Department of Defense using it to enable time-sharing between computers. This group was called the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network or ARPANET, who allowed multiple computers to communicate on one network by using packet switching. During the 1970s, the first network emailing system was created and by 1983, the domain name system was established to better name websites. In 1985, Symbolics.com, a Massachusetts based computer corporation, became the first registered domain and in 1990, HTML was created by CERN scientist Tim Berners-Lee. The modern internet got its start in the 1990s and in 1991 the world wide web went mainstream.
During the 1990s, many websites that we are still familiar with made their debut. For example, Yahoo! launched in 1994, Match.com launched in 1995, Netflix (as a DVD mailer) launched in 1997 and Google’s search engine launched in 1998. Throughout the 2000s, the internet would only continue to grow thanks to sites like WordPress, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. And today, the internet is engrained in our daily lives and you wouldn’t be reading this article or looking at these tattoos without it.
