Bury Me With Roses

Today’s pick for skull of the day goes to the insanely talented Ryan Mullins! Based at Art Junkies Tattoo Studio, Mullins is best known for his impeccable black and grey realism, however, on occasion you can find him cranking out some amazing color work as well, as you can clearly see with today’s pick.

Today’s pick features a beautiful realistic skull surrounded by delicate flowers in various shades of pink. We love how soft the flowers are in comparison to the muted tones of the skull. With such hollow alcoves in the skull’s face, the piece takes on a real haunting beauty.Within the morbid concepts of life surrounding death, this piece depicts fresh flowers around a deceased creature. This intriguing concept is one of the main reasons that skulls are so often depicted with roses or various other flowers, as it has become a staple of tattoo imagery.

We love how the hollows of the skull’s eyes also start to pick up some subtle pink tones, such as those found in the flowers that surround it. It really helps to soften out the whole piece as many skulls are typically shaded with darker colors and black to give it a deep, deathly look. This piece, however, took a lighter approach. We also love the negative space filigree wisps incorporated throughout the entire piece to help, again, soften the piece, but to also add a cool effect to it that you don’t usually come across in tattoos.
