Dolly Parton Dies at 80: Remembering Her Through Tattoos

Dolly Parton’s music, personality, and larger-than-life style made her an icon for generations. Today, the country music legend died at 80, leaving behind a legacy that stretches far beyond her countless hits.

For tattoo fans, that legacy has already been permanently etched into skin.

Dolly Parton inspired everything from colorful portraits to tattoos celebrating her most recognizable songs, lyrics, and signature look. While she was famously associated with rhinestones, big hair, and plenty of sparkle, she had a surprisingly personal relationship with tattoos.

In a 2016 interview with Larry King, Parton explained that she began getting tattoos to disguise keloid scars that sometimes remained purple, choosing small pastel designs rather than bold pieces. Years later, she elaborated in a 2021 interview with W Magazine, saying, “Most of my tattoos came because I’m very fair and I have a tendency to scar when I get any kind of cut.” She added, “I don’t have the real heavy, dark tattoos. Mine are all pastel. And I have more than one!”

Parton spent nearly six decades writing and performing music, becoming one of the most recognizable figures in country music while also building an enormous philanthropic legacy. Her songs became cultural touchstones, her films introduced her to new audiences, and her generosity made her beloved far beyond the stage.
