Australian interactive comic artist Sutu gained notoriety last year when he took comic books to a new level by creating the augmented reality comic “Modern Polaxis.” Now, the award-winning artist has taken tattoos to a new level by using the same free augmented reality app that he and interactive designer Lukasz Karluk created to make the interactive comic book come to life. Sutu recently got an image from his comic tattooed on his forearm, and an Instagram video that he posted shows how the app surprisingly works on skin as well as it does on paper.
“I can’t believe this worked,” he writes in a caption on the video. You can watch the video below.
“Modern Polaxis” is a comic about a paranoid time traveler who “writes about his day to day life, but all his secret information, his paranoid delusion and conspiracy theories, he hides away in the Augmented Reality layer.” By using the free “Polaxis” iOS app, readers can hear and see what is really going on—or, at least what Polaxis thinks is really going on. Readers can also unveil the protagonist’s hidden journal. Once your mobile device is equipped with the app, all you have to do is point it at the comic to experience over 40 pages of audiovisual content.
Watch Sutu’s Instagram videos below. In the first, he displays how the technology works on the pages of the “Modern Polaxis” comic book. In the second, he demonstrates how his tattoo comes to life through the app. The third video is a closeup of the tattoo in action.
