Kurt Cobain as Remembered Through Ink and a New Documentary

Even though it has been 21 years since his death, Kurt Cobain’s name still rings out as loudly as the feedback did as his band trashed their set at the end of a raucous show. Montage of Heck, a new documentary about the too brief life of the Nirvana frontman, aired on HBO last night and shed a light on many of the mysteries surrounding Cobain’s life.

Archival footage of Nirvana’s shows and television interviews was merely one small part of what filmmaker Brett Morgen used to create the documentary. The bulk of the film is comprised of home movies showing Cobain and his wife Courtney Love in their intimate moments, Cobain’s journal entries and recordings, and even comics that Cobain used to scrawl in the margins of his many notebooks. The result is an inside look that at times is overly personal, but ultimately rewarding as the viewer learns more about Cobain than they ever had before.

The imprint that Cobain left on rock music and its fans can be seen clearly in the tattoos that people have had inked in the years since his death. Portrait tattoos of Cobain are far more prevalent than those of any of his contemporaries, it is obvious that people are still affected by the music that he left behind. We highly recommend checking out the documentary as soon as you can. And if you don’t have the chance to watch a movie right now why not put on some Nirvana, crank it to 11, and enjoy this gallery of Kurt Cobain tattoos.
