Margot Robbie Reveals the Script For Harley Quinn’s New Movie

While Harley Quinn may have made her first big screen debut in 2016’s Suicide Squad, this is far from the first time the character has been referenced within the DC Universe. 

The character Harley Quinn was created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, making her grand debut in September of 1992 via Batman: The Animated Series. Quinn was originally written in as a walk-on role and played a sidekick to The Joker during an episode called “Joker’s Favor.” Dini took inspiration for Quinn’s physical appearance from a scene in the soap opera Days of Our Lives, in which Arleen Sorkin’s character wears a jester’s costume during a dream sequence. And having known Sorkin in college, Dini used parts of her personality as inspiration for the story.

Although Suicide Squad does go into some detail about Harley Quinn’s back story, the 1994 graphic novel The Batman Adventures: Mad Love was the first time DC goes into detail about the making of Harley Quinn. Initially, Harley Quinn was known as Dr. Harleen Quinzel PhD, a psychiatrist of Arkham Asylum who falls madly in love with The Joker while treating him as a patient. In the beginning, Quinzel takes on The Joker’s case because she was fascinated by him, however, she soon develops a relationship with him and helps him to escape from the asylum on numerous occasions—later becoming his accomplice throughout the graphic novel and animated series.

While Suicide Squad gained mixed reviews from both critics and the fans, one thing was for sure: people loved the new and improved Harley Quinn.

And although much speculation has been circling since the film’s release over whether Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Quinn in another film, the rumors have finally been confirmed. 

In an Instagram post, Margot Robbie teased her fans with a script for a brand new movie called Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). The film not only features an abundance of women on screen but off as well, with Christina Hodson having written the screenplay and Cathy Yan as the director. Fans may recognize Hodson’s work from 2018’s Bumblebee, a film within the live-action Transformers series. Yan is no stranger to Hollywood herself, directing the 2018 film Dead Pigs which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

While the film’s title was announced on November 20th of 2018, fans will still need to wait a while until it hits theaters. The film is currently slated to premiere on February 14th of 2020 and already, a number of it’s lead characters have been cast.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who is best known for playing Ramona Flowers in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, has been cast as Helena Bertinelli, also known as Huntress.

Scotland’s Ewan McGregor is set to play Roman Sionis, better known as Black Mask, who is a kingpin within the DC Universe. 

Jurnee Smollet-Bell, who fans may recognize from her roles in True Blood, Friday Night Lights and Parenthood, is slated to play Dinah Lance/ Black Canary.

Actress Rosie Perez has been cast in the role of Renee Montoya, a member of Gotham City’s police department.

Lastly, the youngest and cutest member of the confirmed cast is Ella Jay Basco, who plays Cassandra Cain—an orphan who later becomes Batgirl.
