Man Proposes on How Far is Tattoo Far (Plus Video!)
Denzel Wynn proposed to his girlfriend, via first tattoos, in front of millions of viewers.
The MTV reality show, on which people design tattoos for friends’, family members’, frenemies’, or partners’ bodies, tend to leave a lot of dramatic tears after the big reveal.
While we love our How Far Is Tattoo Far horror stories, Burlington native, Denzel Wynn, has melted MTV viewers’ hearts.
And of course, she said yes.
Wynn initially told producers he wanted to design a piece that showed he was ready to adopt the 7-year-old daughter from his now fiancée, Diahna Rivera.
But Rivera had told them, separately, that she was ready to get married. So the producers encouraged him to propose instead.
“I was like, Wow, I really have to think of something fantastic, not only because it’s on TV but because I’m asking for her to marry me, and I’d hate for it to go wrong,” Wynn said.
With the help of a How Far Is Tattoo Far artist, Wynn designed a tattoo of the New York skyline with the words: “Will you marry me?” written at the bottom. Adorably, next to a doodle of a man down on one knee in front of his a doodle Rivera.
Rivera is from New York and loves city views, so Wynn thought it would be perfect for Rivera’s first tattoo.
In return, Rivera designed a ball and chain with her name on it for Wynn’s body, to signify that she has him “locked down.”
Planning progressed quickly, and the MTV staff found a beautiful diamond ring for the pair. They had it waiting for Wynn when the couple arrived in New York to film. Anything for TV. I mean, anything for love.
Rivera took off the signature How Far is Tattoo Far glasses, and immediately began crying. When she turned around, Wynn was down on one knee with the ring box open.
“When the moment is there, you just have to say what’s on your heart,” he said.
What was on his heart was, “Ever since I’ve been with you, you’ve made me a better person, a better man, and you deserve the world, and I really want to give it to you.”
Before he could even ask, she said, “Yes.”
Rivera later said, “Denzel likes to do things pretty big, so of course he would do that on TV in New York with millions of people watching.”
She added that she was “super excited and super happy.”
The episode aired Nov. 8 and has since gone viral on Facebook, accumulating more than 10 million views by Nov. 21.
Rivera said How Far Is Tattoo Far producers could tell this would be the most popular episode.
Both said they know that kids growing up in Burlington can be faced with a lot of negative news, so they’re glad to share something positive.
The couple now lives in Charlotte, where they’re raising their 1-year-old and 7-year-old girls. When they get married, on Oct. 26, 2019, they expect it to be in Charlotte and not New York City. But it will be somewhere they can see the skyline.
