10 Tattoos Inspired by the Top Movies of 2019
From Joker to The Lion King to Ne Zha
2019 was a huge year for the film industry, with a number of big records broken by the most successful films. In fact, two of the highest-grossing films of all time were released in 2019. We’ve curated a list of the highest performing films of the past year, which range from superhero flicks to R-rated features to Disney darlings. Take a look at the final list in the gallery below, then let us know your thoughts on the movies of 2019 in the comments section.
Avengers: Endgame
Unsurprisingly, Avengers: Endgame was the highest grossing film of the year, bringing in $2.798 billion at the box office. This film is the last Avengers‘ sequel and the third most expensive film to make, following 2011’s Pirate of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.
The Lion King
This year, the biggest Disney film (non-Marvel) was The Lion King, which remade the 1994 classic in unbelievable computer animated realism. The film made $1.657 billion at the box office and surpassed Frozen as the highest grossing animated film of all time, as well as the seventh highest grossing of all time.
Toy Story 4
With box office sales of $1.073 billion, Toy Story 4 comes in at number 3 on our list. The Pixar film is the fourth installment of the Toy Story series and was the most commercially successful sequel of the franchise.
Captain Marvel
Captain Marvel became an instant classic when it hit theaters in 2019, earning over one billion dollars world wide. It’s Marvel’s first female-led superhero film and proved that audiences will show up no matter the gender of a film’s protagonist.
Spider-Man: Far From Home
Sony Pictures scored high with this superhero film, which became the first film of the studio and the first Spider-Man film to surpass one billion dollars. Following the film’s success, a sequel is expected to hit theaters in July of 2021.
Frozen II
With over $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales, this sequel met the expectations set by its highly successful predecessor. Not only did it succeed in box office sales, Frozen II had the highest grossing opening for an animated film, earning $358.5 million in its first day.
Aladdin
The live-action adaptation of 1992’s Aladdin was a huge success, bringing in over a billion bucks at the box office. And with a majority unknown cast (with the exception of Will Smith) it’s amazing to see this film take off like it did.
Joker
The first non-Disney film to make 2019’s highest grossing list was Joker, which became the first R-rated film to reach the one billion mark at the box office, with Deadpool 2 and Deadpool coming in at $785M and $783M. And out of the films on this list, it has the most Golden Globe nominations—Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Performance in a Motion Picture Drama, Best Director and Best Score.
Hobbs & Shaw
In the ninth slot of 2019 we have Universal’s Hobbs & Shaw, which earned over $758M worldwide. This film is the fourth highest grossing Fast and Furious film and Dwayne Johnson’s fifth highest grossing film.
Ne Zha
Last on our list, this Chinese film was a huge success at the box office in 2019, earning $723M in China alone. The animated feature was considered for the Best International Feature at the 92nd Academy Awards and became the second highest grossing film in China following 2017’s Wolf Warrior 2.
