It was created by Japanese video game designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, who each went on to hold prestigious titles at Nintendo. The game’s main protagonist is Link, whose purpose is to defeat the game’s monsters, particularly the main antagonist Ganon, while attempting to save Princess Zelda. Zelda is the princess of the kingdom of Hyrule and the guardian of the Triforce of Wisdom. Zelda possesses some magical powers and during “The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword,” it was revealed that she’s a reincarnation of the goddess Hylia. Zelda is named after Zelda Fitzgerald, the wife of novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Since the game’s original release in 1986, the franchise has released 24 sequel games. The most recent game, “The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening” was released in 2019 for Nintendo Switch.
