Captain America #1 is one of the most expensive comic books in the world, especially now that Steve Rogers has become the household friendly face of Marvel‘s blockbuster, The Avengers. Before The Avengers, however, comic fans got the thrill to experience The First Avenger on the big screen with the first Captain America movie, starring the hunky Chris Evans. Evans’ depiction of Captain America has become so well received in popular culture that some fans have even decided to go out and get ink inspired by his portrayal.
Check out this incredible piece by Matteo Pasqualin. Even though it’s done entirely in black and grey, the silhouette and iconic vibranium shield instantly make this Captain recognizable. We love the soft shades of grey that were used to make such a bold piece. And just like the soft greys that help bring such a fierce piece to life, it is the intensity built up within the work that sets the scene implying the action to come. Being able to depict the calm before the storm and have it read as such is no easy feat, and Pasqualin appears to have accomplished such a task almost effortlessly.
The Italian tattoo artist is best known for his black and grey work, so taking on a character so well known for his color scheme of red, white and blue and making him just as readable in black and grey is just mind blowing.
