Cardi B Celebrates Her Grammy Win with an Unusual Lip Piercing

Although it’s only been a month and a half, Cardi B is already killing 2019. In the last week alone, she took home Best Rap Album at the 2019 Grammy Awards and recently announced a brand new song with Bruno Mars, which will be released to the public on February 15th. Amidst all the hype, Cardi took a break from her busy schedule for some much deserved me time and found herself in a piercing shop.

On February 12th, Cardi visited City of Angels Tattoo in Los Angeles, California for a walk in piercing appointment. According to TMZ, her piercer Luis Vega didn’t recognize the Grammy winner, at first thinking she was one of his regular clients. However, once Cardi started talking, he quickly realized who she was.

For just $25, Cardi walked away with a fairly unusual piece of body jewelry, known in the industry as a horizontal lip piercing. Similar to a vertical labret piercing, a curved barbell goes through the lip and the jewelry is held in place by two balls at either end. This is classified as a surface piercing and is pretty uncommon in the body modification world. More common lip piercings include your classic labret, snake bites, or the Medusa piercing. 

Cardi has been a trendsetter in many ways, from her quirky expressions to her Fashion Nova threads, so it’s likely we’ll be seeing copycat horizontal lip piercings in 2019. After stars like Rihanna and Zoe Kravitz pierced their septums a few years back, we saw a flood of these piercings across social media. Only time will tell if the horizontal lip piercing becomes the next big thing in body modification.
