Tattoos in Thailand come with age old tradition and religious practices. In fact, Buddhist Monks are known to be masters of the trade. It is believed that tattoos by these masters provide protection and are blessed body art. During the tattoo process, which is extremely painful due to the hand-tap method used, prayers are often chanted. The most popular of these tattoos is known as a sak yant—columns of sacred Khmer script.
It’s likely not all of the people in this gallery underwent traditional Thai tattoo practices, but they certainly were inspired by what the ink represents. When you think about it, many tattoos are a form of protection and represent one’s beliefs. Take a look at the gorgeous gallery below.
