Listen Up Millennials: This Toast Art is Next Level

Sasamana's toast art is almost too beautiful to eat

What is it with baby boomers thinking millennials are obsessed with avocado toast? Sure, I have it just about every morning and I even have an avocado tattoo—but I’m in the 1% of avo toast lovers. Anyways, it’s basically a proven fact that us twenty somethings have a thing for fancy toast. There’s just something about a piece of bread with a 1/4th of an avocado shmear and some lemon salt that make us empty our wallets. I can’t explain it, but it must be biology.

However, I’m not the only one to share my love for fancy toast online. Some of us have taken our love for this morning munchie way further, including Japanese artist Manami Sasakai. Since quarantine began, this designer and artist has been creating elaborate toast art for her social media and her edible creations are down right breathtaking. Seriously, I’d almost not eat them they’re so pretty. Then again, we all already know I can’t resist a slice of fancy toast.

STAYHOMEのあさごはん 本日のテーマは、小村雪岱「おせん 傘(1937)」☔︎ 大正〜昭和初期にかけて活躍した挿絵画家。演劇の舞台装置も担当していたというマルチアーティスト。 余白を生かした画面構成や洗練された描写、江戸とモダンの掛け合わせが魅力。 こだわりポイントは、雨をイカスミで描いた上からサワークリームを塗り、スクラッチしたところ。焼いたときに表情が変わります。 具材：サワークリーム、イカスミ —— Today’s theme is Komura Sektai “Osen Umbrella (1937)”.☔︎ Osen is the title of the Japanese novel,and this picture was originally an illustration.☺️ My sticking point is that I painted the rain with squid ink, applied sour cream, and then scratched it. When baked, the look of the rain changes.

STAYHOMEのあさごはん 本日のテーマは、絵本「ねないこだれだ」 せなけいこさんの描く絵本のなかでも、最高傑作と呼ばれる本作。 子供時代の「怖い」という感情は、笑いや喜びの感情を育てる大切な要素なんですって 知らなかった！ 外出自粛による寝れない問題、みなさんいかがでしょうか。 子供大人限らず、質の良い睡眠のためにみなさんが工夫をしていること、教えて欲しいです (私は起きる時間を早めて自分の趣味に熱中したり、日中に日光浴をしています。) 具材：イカスミ、サワークリーム、パプリカ、マスタード、チーズ、のり — Today’s theme is the famous Japanese picture book “Don’t Want to Go To Bed? “ The emotion of “fear” as a child is an important part of developing feelings of laughter and joy. The ingredients for the bread are squid smear and sour cream, paprika, cheese, mustard, and seaweed.

STAYHOMEのあさごはん 今日はメキシコ五輪(1968)のエンブレム デザインは、ランス・ワイマン。当時なんと29歳！ メキシコ先住民のアートと、サイケデリックのトレンドを融合した名作。 68年のメキシコはまだ教育が行き届いておらず識字率が低かったそうで、デザイン全体がほぼビジュアル表現。これがすごいんです (なかでも入場チケットが最高！座席ナンバーもイラスト。) 歴代五輪のエンブレムのなかで、わたしはメキシコが好きです 具材はほぼイカスミ。完全にはまってます。 — Today’s theme is the Mexican Olympics(1968) emblem. The design is by American designer Lance Wyman. He was 29 years old at the time. The work blends indigenous Mexican art with psychedelic trends. It’s my favorite design of all the Olympic emblems.:) The ingredient is squid meat. It’s very tasty.

STAYHOMEのあさごはん 本日のテーマは家紋 江戸時代に栄えた「家のロゴマーク」的な、日本独特の文化。その家にゆかりのある文様やモチーフをデザインに落とし込んでいて、家紋を見ていると昔の日本人の生活を妄想しちゃいます。 私は、個性や理念に沿った名刺・ロゴを考えるのが好きなので、もしも江戸時代に生まれていたら、家紋デザイナーとして生計を立てたい・・・！笑 素材はサワークリームとズッキーニ。 焼いてもそのままでも美味しいです。 素材の優しい味で気持ちが安らぎます。 — KAMON is a family crest. It is a unique Japanese culture that flourished most during the Edo period. It is used as a mark to indicate the family lineage and pedigree, with the motif of an object related to the family. Modern Japanese have their own family crests, but many people do not know their own family crests due to the westernization of Japan.

STAYHOMEのあさごはん 11日目のテーマは花札(HANAFUDA) こいこい〜 材料は、サワークリーム、しらす、青のり、焼きのり、明太子、ミニトマト 花札のデザイン展開と絶妙なサイズ感が好きで、鑑賞用として楽しんでます 季節に合わせたモチーフも、版ズレの塗り表現も粋。ちなみに、好きな札は1月の「松に鶴/Jan.Pine」、7月の「萩に猪/Jul.JPN Bush Clover」です 学生の頃に花札を題材に香水のブランディングを提案したなぁ。懐かしい。 Hanafuda is Japanese playing cards. That is usually played by two persons. There are cards of 12 different kinds of flower and 4 kinds of same flower. The game is to match the same kinds of flower.

STAYHOMEのあさごはん 8日目の朝ごはんのテーマは、ディック・ブルーナさんの代表作、ミッフィー たらこマヨ、サワークリーム、海苔、チェダーチーズです。ああ美味しい。 毎度のことながら、たらこマヨ作りすぎたので、昼も食べます ⚡️ 焼けたときのミッフィー、笑いを分かってらっしゃるご様子 溶けてかわいい。 絵本作家、グラフィックデザイナーとして活躍したブルーナさんは、120冊ほどの絵本を描いたそう。こりゃ、読む側も大変だ ‍♀️ 大胆かつシンプル、そして愛らしい。ポーズや持ち物で、同じ顔でも感情が違って見えるのは、細部のこだわりの賜物

STAYHOMEのあさごはん 4日目はゲゲゲの鬼太郎の1コマ。 ※食卓にそぐわない表現が一部ありますが、ねずみ小僧に免じてお許しください ‍♂️ マーガリンと「ごはんですよ」のパンですよ ‍♀️ TVで、パンに「ごはんですよ」が合うって聞いてからずっと気になっていて、ようやくチャレンジできました。惣菜パンとして優秀！味が濃いので、かけ過ぎは注意です 手書きトーンへの執念や色面のメリハリ、引きと寄りのリズム感・・・水木しげるワールドにうっとりする美大生でした。漫画はあまり読まない私ですが、画集として眺めてたな〜 おどろおどろしい線が、「ごはんですよ」の昆布の抑揚に親和性を感じる気もしています☺️(無理ある？) ぜひお試しください、と言いたいところですが、「ごはんですよ」の昆布が意外と大きくて、繊細な線の表現は難易度が高かったです⚡️なので・・・忍耐力に自信がある方、我こそは、という方はぜひ！
