Celebrate the Legacy of Selena Quintanilla with Tattoos
The Tejano superstar lives on through ink
Selena Quintanilla is one of the most celebrated musicians of all time, making history for Tejano performers and inspiring Latina women for years following her death. Quintanilla was born on April 16th, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas and began singing at an early age. She debuted in the Tejano band Selena y Los Dinos in 1981 and faced criticism as a woman in a male dominated genre. However, her music spoke to millions and she soon became a Tejano sensation, winning the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year nine years in a row. She gained international attention after winning Best Mexican/American Album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first female Tejano musician to do so.
However, at age 23 her life was cut short when she was shot and killed by her former fan club manager, Yolanda Saldívar. After her death, her album “Dreaming of You” debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart, making Quintanilla the first Latin artist to accomplish this.
Quintanilla inspired countless performers with her music, style and grace, including Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez and Jennifer Lopez. She also inspired a number of tattoo collectors, who have her portrait as well as other images of her brand permanently inked on their bodies.
