Celebrate National Velociraptor Awareness Day with 25 Ferocious Tattoos
What's your favorite dinosaur?
If you’re not already aware, velociraptors are pretty damn awesome. Velociraptors were a species of dinosaurs that lives between 75 and 71 million years ago. They were dromaeosauridaes, which means running lizards in Greek, and had feathers, three toes and were small to medium in size. These carnivores lived during the Cretaceous period, alongside fellow dinosaurs like the tyrannosaurus rex, triceratops and pterosaur.
The velociraptor was first discovered on August 11th, 1923 by Peter Kaisen during an American Museum of Natural History expedition in the Gobi Desert in Outer Mongolia. The dinosaur was given its name in 1924 by the museum’s president, paleontologist and geologist Henry Fairfield Osborn. The name is Latin for swift robber, taking from the words velox and raptor.
Velociraptors are most known from “Jurassic Park,” appearing in both Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel and Steven Spielberg’s 1993 film. However, these creatures more closely resembled another dromaeosauridae dinosaur— the deinonychus. This dinosaur lived between 115 and 108 million years ago and could grow to be 11 feet in length. This isn’t the only scientific inaccuracy in the book, as most of the dinosaurs depicted existed during the Creaceous period, as opposed to the later Jurassic period.
