In hundreds of bits and pieces, the Statue of Liberty landed on American soil a short 130 years ago, on June 17, 1885. Her parts were then assembled, and she officially made Liberty Island (formerly Bedloe Island) home on October 28, 1885. The Statue was designed by French sculptor Frederic Bartholdi. He began turning his monumental idea into a reality in 1865, according to the National Park Service. When Bartholdi “first entered New York harbor by ship, he spotted the location where he knew the Statue must stand–Bedloe’s Island.” In his eyes, New York was the gateway to America. Today, her majestic power and beauty stand as a symbol of freedom and liberty not just for the United States but all countries covering the world’s seven continents.
