Celebrate National Pokémon Day with 20 Colorful and Cute Tattoos
Who's your favorite Pokémon?
In 1996, Pokémon was first released to Japanese gamers by Nintendo and after selling more than 300 million games worldwide, it became the second best-selling video game franchise following Mario. It’s also been declared the world’s largest media franchise, spawning a successful anime series, movies, merchandise and the augmented reality game Pokémon Go, which has been downloaded over one billion times.
During the first generation, the franchise introduced 151 original species of Pokémon. In this 151 Pokémon, you have classic characters like Bulbasaur (1), Charmander (4), Squirtle (7), Pikachu (25) and Mew (151). Pokémon are categorized by type, both primary and secondary, which have strengths and weaknesses that impact their ability to battle opponents. In the original games, there are 15 unique types: Normal, Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Ghost, and Dragon. Almost all Pokémon in the original 151 have the ability to evolve, which is gained from battle experience. For example, Charizard is the final and most powerful evolution of Charmander.
So far, there have been eight generations of Pokémon spread out over nearly 25 years and along the way, 739 new Pokémon have been added to the franchise. In honor of the growth of Pokémon, we’re celebrating National Pokémon day by sharing a handful of our favorite tattoos inspired by the franchise.
