Kickstarter’s New “Tattoo Me” Campaign
Illma Gore's Kickstarter project, "Tattoo Me," offers backers the chance to design tattoos for her body. Pledge $10 for your name or $1,000 for custom designs.
What would you do if there was some stranger out in the world, someone you had never met before, wearing your name tattooed on their leg? What if right next to your name was the name of your best friend? And what’s more? There is also a drawing of an aardvark you and your friend designed inked below the two monikers. Yeah, we know this sounds strange, but it’s all possible thanks to a brand new Kickstarter campaign.

Meet Illma Gore, the woman behind the “Tattoo Me” project on Kickstarter. In a month long attempt to raise $6,000 in order to afford getting the rest of her body inked, Gore has offered up various rewards for people to actually contribute their own names and designs to her (hopefully) soon-to-be collection of ink. For a base pledge of ten bucks, she will tattoo your name on her leg, but if you are feeling a bit more generous, a pledge of $1,000 will get you a tattoo of your name, your best friend’s name, the promise of protection from a gypsy curse, a sketch by Gore depicting you as a human ham, a printed photo of your name tattooed on Gore, the chance to design a 2” x 4 “ tattoo for Gore, and the chance to design the tattoo for her right thigh.

For this project Gore will not be exclusively getting tattooed with her backers’ requests. Part of her body will be reserved for ink inspired by her own choosing, such as her back, left leg, and parts of her arms. Her chest, stomach, right leg, and shoulder blades, however, are up for grabs for those willing to donate. She’s even offered to scale back on her own designs to make more room for donator’s names if she gets enough backers.
We’ve seen some bizarre Kickstarters in the past—we can’t forget the guy who made several thousand dollars crowdfunding his attempt to make potato salad—but this project takes social experiments to a whole new level. Though Gore offers that in place of tattooing your name she will get any one to two words that you request, it will be more interesting to see if the project (ending on February 8th) will get enough backers, and if so, how many people will be willing to let a complete stranger walk around with their name inked into her skin forever.
