A Brief History of Cosmos Tattoos for Stephen Hawking’s Birthday
The revered physicist would have turned 78 today. Let's look to the skies above in his honor.
Stephen Hawking was many things. He was a renowned theoretical physicist, an author with multiple bestsellers and he was a cosmologist often speculating about the greater universe around us. Not to mention that he had one of the greatest Simpsons cameos ever.

For over 50 years, Hawking lived with a rare form of Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Despite being confined to a wheelchair and unable to speak without the assistance of a speech-generating device, Hawking was able to explore the universe with his mind.
Much of Hawking’s work was in the field of general relativity, specifically working on the theory that black holes gave off radiation. Let’s be honest, that’s a lot to unpack and this is Inked, theoretical physics isn’t exactly our forte.
That being said, we do share a lot of common ground with Hawking. Our heads are often in the clouds dreaming about the cosmos above. As artists, our focus is more towards the beauty that can be found than figuring out how the universe was created, but we’re still actively considering the universe we live in.
In the gallery below you’ll find tattoos of Hawking, tattoos of the universe that surrounds us and some surreal pieces that will make you reconsider your current reality. Happy Birthday in the great beyond, Stephen.
