In 1990, film making legends John Hughes and Chris Columbus released one of the most prolific and impactful Christmas films of all time—Home Alone. The film stars Macaulay Culkin as Kevin McCallister, an eight-year-old kid whose family forgets him at home while leaving for a trip to Paris, leaving McCallister to fend for himself against two thieves who attempt to rob the family home. The film features performances by renowned actors such as Joe Pesci and Catherine O’Hara, and was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Original Score and Best Original Song, thanks to the work of composer John Williams.
Home Alone held the record for the highest-grossing live action comedy film for over two decades, until being beaten by The Hangover II, and was also the highest-grossing Christmas film of all time until 2018’s The Grinch. The film spawned a four sequels, including Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, which featured a majority of the original cast as well as a guest appearance from Donald Trump.
