Remembering Janis Joplin with 27 Memorial Tattoos, and The Ones She Wore by Lyle Tuttle
"The one on my wrist is for everybody," Janis Joplin said. "The one on my tit is for me and my friends... just a little treat for the boys, like icing on the cake."
The “Queen of Psychedelic Soul” was the counterculture’s icon well before tattoos were trendy. In April of 1970, Janis Joplin’s outer wrist was tattooed by legendary artist Lyle Tuttle. His famous design, a symbol standing for the liberation of women, was done in his shop on Seventh Street in San Francisco. She wore a small heart tattooed over her chest.
“I wanted some decoration,” Joplin said. “See, the one on my wrist is for everybody. The one on my tit is for me and my friends… just a little treat for the boys, like icing on the cake.”
