Today’s skull of the day goes to Victor Modafferi. Modafferi is the owner and head tattooist at Bullseye Tattoos in Staten Island, New York. He is best known for his black and grey style, which has led him to take many talented artists under his wing. One of the most well-known artists that he has mentored is another black and grey specialist, the talented Danny Lepore. Today’s pick is a great example of Modafferi’s work as it showcases many key conventions used in black and grey tattooing but holds a signature twist to make it unique to Modafferi’s style. The soft grey tones and texture really make this piece stand out as it incorporates many iconic images from the typical tattoo aesthetic. Not only does it feature the classic pairing of a realistic skull with a realistic rose, it also embellishes the piece with delicate filigree rounding out the implied shape of the skull. This piece features no white highlighting, which also takes it back to the more old school style of tattooing in black and grey: through basic grey wash. For more highly impressive skull and flower tattoos, check out some of our top picks right here.
