Today’s skull of the day is this amazing piece by Sean McCready. Skilled in both color and black and grey tattoos, McCready is best known for his color work, which might explain why there are some many gorgeous colors packed into today’s pick!
Skulls and flowers typically go very well together in tattoo imagery, but usually the flowers are red roses, not gorgeous pink flowers like the rather exotic ones used in this piece. Typically, skulls are a strange off-white color, too, however, McCready really stepped it up when he made the skull reflect more of an iridescent effect with its cool color collage. This iridescence is then complimented by the gemstone in the necklace next to the skull, tying the whole piece together. Though the color palette for this piece borders on neon, none of it feels overworked or over thought. The colors all line up beautifully in the end result.
McCready is a tattoo artist based in Oahu, Hawaii, so taking a bright, colorful, and out of the box approach to a skull and flowers piece may be directly related to the bright and beautiful surroundings he finds in his home state. Typically, Hawaii is known for its cool spin on Polynesian tattoos, but as McCready displays, incredible color work is also coming out of the area and pushing the boundaries of typical tattoo conventions.
