Drew Barrymore Shares Sweet Story Behind ‘Olive and Frankie’ Wrist Tattoo

The wrist tattoo Drew Barrymore got of her daughters’ names in early April is adorable on its own, but the story behind the impromptu ink is even sweeter, if you ask us. Apparently, the decision to get a new tattoo was completely spontaneous, although the 41-year-old had been contemplating getting inked for a while, and when it came to choosing a design for the piece, Barrymore looked no further than her two baby girls, Olive, 3, and Frankie, 2. The simple but meaningful tattoo is inked on the inside of Barrymore’s right wrist and reads “Olive and Frankie” in a plain black text.
This new wrist artwork isn’t Drew Barrymore’s first tattoo. In fact, her “Olive and Frankie” ink marks at least tattoo number four for the actress, who also rocks a “BREATHE” tattoo on her left forearm, an outline of a bird on her right forearm, and an ornate cross wrapped in flowery vines on her right ankle. It seems this latest piece is her most meaningful though, and she captioned the Instagram snap of her tattoo session, “Getting a great little lifetime note on my arm.”

When asked about her new tattoo at Safe Kids Day 2016 in L.A. last weekend, the actress had this to say: “I had been wanting to do it, and then one day we were on our way to an appointment. I was like, ‘Can we just quickly stop at this tattoo shop?’” The story doesn’t end there, though. Apparently, Barrymore walked into the shop and asked if anyone was available to do a tattoo, right then and there. “This guy came in and he was like, ‘Yeah, I can.’ And I was like, ‘I’m going to write this down on a piece of paper, and can you just transfer it onto my arm?’”
The tattoo artist, who apparently had no idea who his client was, or at least played it cool for her sake, did what he was asked, and copied the names of Barrymore’s daughters, Olive and Frankie, onto her wrist, so the tattoo is actually done in the actress’ own handwriting. Barrymore documented the tattoo session with a series of photos posted on her Instagram account, and while she didn’t share the identity of the artist responsible for her wrist tattoo, she did say, “He was lovely and very mellow. He’s on my Instagram, if you ever want to see him. He’s very sweet.”
