When it comes to the 90th annual Oscars ceremony, for the first time in history horror reigned supreme. Generally set aside from the high profile awards ceremonies, this often misunderstood genre took home big titles such as Best Picture, Best Original Screen Play, and Best Director. The films that shined in these categories were ‘Get Out,’ directed by Jordan Peele and ‘The Shape of Water,’ directed by Guillermo del Toro. And although both films approached horror in unique, inventive, and distinctive ways—together they prove that there is more to the genre than cheap gore and shitty special effects.
