Why Grigorii Butrin believes realism begins with light, not ink.

Ask most people what defines black and grey realism and they’ll point to detail. Ask Grigorii Butrin, and he’ll point to light.

Working out of Aursys Studio in Downtown Los Angeles, Butrin believes realism isn’t about reproducing a photograph with technical precision. It’s about understanding how light shapes form, creates depth, and gives an image its emotional weight. To him, light isn’t simply an artistic technique. It’s what separates a tattoo that looks technically accurate from one that creates depth, dimension, and longevity once it becomes part of the skin.

“I do not just try to replicate an image,” Butrin says. “I try to capture its character and create a piece that feels alive.”

That philosophy defines everything he creates. While many realism artists focus on technical detail, Butrin has spent years mastering how light and shadow influence depth, atmosphere, and readability. Without formal academic training, he developed his approach through years of studying classical realism, cinema, and photography, building an instinct for how subtle changes in value shape the final result.

That understanding of light is immediately recognizable throughout Butrin’s portfolio. His portraits preserve expression without sacrificing realism. Large scale compositions maintain flow, depth, and readability across the body’s natural anatomy, while every transition in value reinforces the illusion of form. Every decision serves a purpose, creating contrast that not only strengthens the tattoo on day one but helps it maintain clarity and impact as it heals.

That same philosophy shapes his creative process.

Every project begins with a conversation. Butrin wants to understand not only what a client wants tattooed, but why it matters. From there, he develops a custom composition that works with the body’s natural anatomy instead of forcing artwork onto the skin.

“People often want to put much more into a tattoo than just an image,” Butrin says. “My goal is to express that meaning through a strong visual composition.”

It’s why he gravitates toward full backs, sleeves, and portrait work. Large scale projects give him the space to develop compositions that flow naturally with the body, while portraits demand complete control of light, shadow, and expression. In black and grey realism, there is nowhere to hide. Every value shift contributes to the illusion of depth.

He relies on the Bishop Power WAND, Kwadron Magnum needles, and Dynamic Black and White inks, but Butrin believes equipment only supports an artist’s vision. It never replaces it.

That mindset also shapes the way he views the industry.

As tattooing continues to evolve, Butrin believes clients are becoming more educated and intentional. Rather than choosing artists based on price alone, they’re seeking out individual styles and valuing originality over trends. To him, it’s another sign that tattooing continues to mature as an art form.

His career reflects that progression. Recognition at major tattoo conventions, including First Place in the Best Black and Grey Portrait category at the Golden State Tattoo Expo and awards at the Villain Arts Tattoo Festival Chicago, underscores the consistency of his work. As a convention judge, he evaluates artists on technical execution, composition, readability, and overall impact, reinforcing his belief that tattooing advances when artists continue raising the standard.

For younger artists, his advice is simple. Don’t spend your career chasing someone else’s style. Study art. Practice relentlessly. Stay curious. Be patient enough to develop your own way of seeing because genuine artistic identity can’t be rushed.
