When Brands are Built on Rebellion
Meet the Entrepreneurs Who Ignored the Rules
Tattoo culture has always been shaped by people who trust instinct over approval. Long before it was visible or celebrated, it was built by individuals who ignored the rulebook, learned by doing, and stayed loyal to their vision even when it meant standing alone. The Art of Rebellion looks at a group of entrepreneurs who carry that same mindset forward through the brands they’ve built.
These founders work across fashion, gear, art, wellness, and lifestyle, creating products rooted in personal conviction rather than market trends. Some lean into darkness, symbolism, or subculture. Others focus on craft, function, or community. What connects them is a shared refusal to dilute their ideas or soften their point of view to fit expectations.
Each story begins with a moment of divergence. A decision to make something that didn’t exist yet, to solve a problem no one else was addressing, or to build a brand that reflected how they actually lived. That instinct-led approach mirrors the way tattoos are chosen and carried: deliberately, personally, and without apology.
The Art of Rebellion explores the entrepreneurs who build the same way tattoo culture has always evolved, through conviction, independence, and a willingness to do things differently, even when there’s an easier path available.
Sacred Profane
Sacred Profane is a uniquely focused brewery and tankpub in Biddeford, Maine, devoted to crafting lagers that honor heritage while embracing innovation. Launched in 2022, the name reflects a philosophy of reverence mixed with irreverence—rooted in traditional brewing rituals yet bold enough to question conventions. Sacred Profane brews just two beers, a Pale Lager and a Dark Lager, each brewed with meticulous attention to process, including open fermentation, triple decoction mashing, and conditioning in horizontal tanks. Beer is dispensed straight from copper tanks suspended above the bar—an homage to the Czech “tankovna” pubs that inspired the concept.
At the heart of this endeavor is Brienne Allan, co-founder and head brewer. Known in the brewing world for her extensive experience and uncompromising standards, Brienne previously held key brewing roles at respected breweries like Notch Brewing. She envisioned a place where community, craftsmanship, and conviviality converge. Her ambition wasn’t just to open another brewery, but to build a space that feels like a gathering hall—warm, welcoming, and centered on quality beer and human connection.
Under Brienne’s leadership, Sacred Profane quickly became a standout in Maine’s beer scene, celebrated for its commitment to excellence, community values, and the simple joy of a perfectly executed lager. Every pour at Sacred Profane is an invitation: Cold lager, warm hearts, a toast to tradition and the thrill of discovery
Explicit Essentials
Explicit Essentials is a woman owned and operated bath and body brand just outside Knoxville, Tennessee with a clear mission: to create intentional, funny, affordable self-care products for women who want to feel good without compromising. The brand is built by a team of badass women, crafting small batch products using cruelty free, ethically sourced ingredients.
Explicit Essentials exists as an antidote to quiet, curated wellness and the pressure to be endlessly agreeable. The language is intentional. The humor is honest. Nothing is softened or polished to feel more marketable. Shower steamers that read “Exhale The Bullshit” or bath salts that say “Bitch Relax” The bad words cut through politeness, name emotions honestly, and meet real experiences exactly as they are, all while delivering high-quality products designed for true relaxation.
For Explicit Essentials, rebellion isn’t chaos, it’s choosing yourself in a world that benefits from your exhaustion. It’s treating rest as non-negotiable and self care as something you don’t have to earn by being productive. It’s the kind of care you give yourself and the women you love, a quiet reminder to pause, breathe and laugh. This is the rebellion that shows up in small moments, when we stop shrinking, stop explaining, and take up space without apology.
Chaos Theory
Chaos Theory, founded in Brooklyn by Alicia Arlotta, exists at the intersection of the brutalist structure of cities and the organic forms that thrive within them. The brand creates architecture for the body, designed to frame the human form as a living masterpiece. Its designs highlight the parts of the body that tell the story of growth and personal evolution, fostering empowerment for the wearer and celebrating life. Inspired by the idea that small changes can produce monumental outcomes, Chaos Theory embraces adornment and self-expression as a means to reclaim control and reconnect with one’s identity.
Rooted in architectural design, the brand produces adjustable, modular harnesses meant to evolve alongside the wearer. Soft satin straps combine a sustainable, ethical approach to bondage wear with the luxurious feel of high-end lingerie. Influenced by the bold energy of New York nightlife, the harnesses move effortlessly from intimate spaces to the wider world. Subtle hardware details, including hidden leash attachments, allow pieces to shift seamlessly between autonomy and connection. These elements are intentionally understated, visible only to those meant to notice. They also serve as modular accents: the center strap can be removed to create a collar or belt, or replaced with a chain for a different look. Each piece invites customization, revealing something new with every wear. At its core, Chaos Theory believes that clothing should adapt to the body, not the other way around.
Pando Moto
PANDO MOTO is a premium motorcycle clothing brand founded on a belief: riders should never sacrifice safety for style.
The brand was established in 2011 by Marius Bieliauskas, a lifelong motorcyclist and explorer, whose connection to motorcycles began long before PANDO MOTO even existed. Growing up in a family that deeply appreciated the motorcycle culture, Marius experienced a challenge many riders still face today: protective gear that prioritises function but ignores design, or stylish motorcycle clothing that sacrifices real protection.
Rather than choosing either, Marius decided to create the brand he couldn’t find. That is how PANDO MOTO was born: from real frustration, curiosity, and a deep respect for riding. From the very beginning, Marius’s goal was clear: to create motorcycle apparel that delivers the highest level of safety while remaining refined, comfortable to wear, and timeless.
More than a decade later, Marius remains closely involved in product development and creative direction. The hands-on approach lies at the core of PANDO MOTO’s Engineered By Riders® philosophy – apparel developed through real riding, real-world conditions, and constant refinement.
All products are developed in-house using advanced materials, including proprietary ballistic textiles such as Balistex®, as well as CE-certified protection that meets strict European PPE standards. The collection also features truly unique protective baselayers found nowhere else on the market. At PANDO MOTO, protection is never considered an add-on – it is integrated into the very structure of each garment.
Clean silhouettes, purposeful construction, and understated aesthetics are what define PANDO MOTO. Engineered by riders. Built for modern explorers.
Goth N’ Rock
Goth N’ Rock is an alternative fashion brand inspired by gothic and rock subcultures, created for those who view clothing as a form of identity. Dark, expressive, and unapologetically bold, the brand is designed for people who feel most themselves in strong silhouettes, layered textures, and statement details. Goth N’ Rock is not about trends. It is about presence, confidence, and personal style.
At the core of Goth N’ Rock is a focus on quality craftsmanship. Each collection is carefully made with attention to distinctive design and materials chosen for both comfort and durability. The brand offers a curated assortment of goth and alternative clothing that allows wearers to express their individuality. From edgy gothic dresses and statement tops to structured jackets, winter coats, and everyday essentials with an alternative twist, each piece balances attitude with wearability.
A standout within the collection is the Eclipse Collection, a lounge and lifestyle line that brings gothic aesthetics into everyday comfort. Featuring refined two piece sets, rich velvet textures, hooded tanks, and subtle mesh accents, Eclipse is designed for slow mornings, late nights, and everything in between. The collection feels relaxed, dark, and effortlessly cool while remaining rooted in style.
With a strong focus on innovative design, inclusivity, and high quality materials, Goth N’ Rock continues to shape the future of gothic fashion. It is not just about what you wear, but about embracing a lifestyle that celebrates individuality, freedom of expression, and the confidence to define your own style on your own.
Dark Cottage
Enter Dark Cottage, a gothic fantasy fashion brand redefining alternative style through comfort, inclusive sizing, and intentional design. Inspired by magic, nature, and dark romance, the brand offers a more whimsical approach to goth fashion, and a vision that comfort doesn’t have to be sacrificed for style.
In an industry of narrow standards, Dark Cottage exists in quiet defiance, designing clothes for real lives and real bodies; flowing skirts with deep pockets, cozy cloak-style rain jackets with large hoods, embroidered dresses that are both functional and beautiful. With a focus on adjustable designs in sizes XS through 5X, soft breathable fabrics, and thoughtfully practical details, Dark Cottage clothing is made to be worn every day, not saved for special occasions.
Founded by Victoria in 2020, Dark Cottage is for anyone that’s ever been told they’re too much. For the village witches and cottagecore dreamers with a dark aesthetic. For those tired of itchy fabrics, tight silhouettes, and being told how alternative style should look. Dark Cottage creates clothing that feels powerful and feminine, like armor, and adds a little bit of magic to the mundane. A comfortable way to show the world how you want to be seen, and claim space without asking permission. In choosing softness, longevity, and intention, Dark Cottage makes its rebellion clear: fashion should serve the wearer, not the other way around.
Speedball
Speedball’s rich history in manufacturing high-quality art materials began in 1899 in Camden, NJ. While their product portfolio has grown and evolved over their more than 125-year history, and they have planted roots in Statesville, North Carolina, one thing remains the same and is at the core of what they do: their deep investment in people. Through innovation shaped by artists’ insights and the craftsmanship in each hand-tooled, hand-inspected, and hand-packed item, their commitment to engaging communities across specialties and techniques is genuine, meaningful, and inspires trust and creativity. This connection helps them better serve their customers, as their team—many of whom dedicate decades to perfecting their craft—continues to deliver consistent, high-quality products from their studio to yours. These collaborations will carry Speedball into the future, and together with their partners, they continue to create something truly special.
Lip Service
Lip Service was founded in 1985 by Drew Bernstein, a Hollywood skate-punk with a vision and zero interest in doing things the “right” way. What started in Drew’s parents’ garage with the now-iconic dagger legging quickly turned into something much bigger: a brand built on raw creativity, rebellion, and a refusal to blend in. That same creative energy still fuels Lip Service today.
Over the decades, Lip Service has offered one of the widest ranges of alternative clothing in the world, outfitting generations of outsiders, artists, musicians, club kids, and misfits. From Punk, Rock, Metal, Glam, and Grunge to Goth, Death Rock, Cyber, and Fetish, if it lives outside the mainstream, Lip Service has probably been there first. The brand doesn’t just sell clothes; it helps people look and feel unapologetically cool.
While attitude comes first, responsibility matters too. Lip Service recognizes the importance of sustainability and protecting the planet. Giving back has always been part of its DNA. With each item sold, the company donates a percentage to foundations Drew believed were doing real good in the world, causes rooted in compassion, action, and community.
Nearly four decades in, Lip Service remains loud, loyal, and fiercely independent, with continued gratitude for the love, support, and belief in what it does.
