“My work speaks for itself,” was one of the most accurate things Norman Collins ever said. The man better known as Sailor Jerry put everything into his work, eventually fusing Americana and traditional Japanese tattooing methods into his own signature style. Having gone down in tattoo history as one of the most iconic and innovative tattooists to ever live, Sailor Jerry’s work truly did speak for itself. Now, 42 years after his passing, the largest collection of Sailor Jerry’s original flash will be put on public display for the first time ever on American soil.
Starting Thursday, March 19th and running through Saturday, March 21st, The Sailor Jerry Gallery will be on display at this year’s South By Southwest (SXSW). Whether it’s film, music, or interactive performances and art exhibitions, this iconic ten day festival series is known for showcasing some of the hottest and most innovative artistic outlets of the times, thus making it the perfect platform to debut this landmark gallery.
This brief three day showing will display iconic pieces of Sailor Jerry flash, original artwork, and sketches like never before, so make sure to stop by to check out this incredible series from the godfather of modern tattooing! For a preview of the gallery, check out the images below, and in case you can’t make it down to Austin, make sure to track #SJGallery on Instagram during SXSW to get live coverage of the show.
The Sailor Jerry Gallery will be held at 908 E. 5th Street, #106, Austin, TX 78702 from Thursday, March 19th through Saturday, March 21st. The gallery will be open each day from noon to 6pm.
