Nipsey was shot outside his own clothing store, Marathon Clothing, in March and sadly passed away from the incident. People across the rap industry were hit hard by the loss, because Nipsey was just a regular guy trying to make it. He embodied blackness in America for many, and his loss served as a reminder that no one is safe from death.
The lyrics “The marathon continues but it’s getting harder to breathe,” suddenly became too real with the fatal shooting of the rapper. Nipsey only lived to see himself nominated for one Grammy, which he ultimately lost to Cardi B. Even the way Nipsey lost to Cardi was full of grace and dignity– he was happy for her, and never felt cheated.
