MTV Debuts Explicit, Queer, and Tattooed Reality Show
This show was almost too scandalous to air
After eight seasons, MTV’s Are You The One? is mixing things up in a major way. The basic concept of the show remains the same, with hot singles living together under one roof and working week by week to find their perfect match in the house in order to win a group prize of $1 million. However, instead of featuring desirable heterosexual couples, MTV has flipped the switch by bringing on a 100% LGBTQIA+ cast.
Each member of season 8’s cast is sexually fluid, meaning that the gender binary does not dictate the perfect match system. And although the show is only one episode in, we imagine that this new format will be the most challenging twist to face the series thus far.
However, despite presenting an unexpected challenge, the season’s cast sheds light on an extremely important message, that being LGBTQIA+ representation. Ten years ago, you’d be hard pressed to find a reality show that featured queer people with diverse gender, sexual, and racial backgrounds. But, as many of the show’s contenders will tell you, media representation of the queer community is long overdue and will only continue to evolve as time goes on.
Take a look at the show’s in-depth trailer and get to know some of this season’s featured contestants in the video below. Then let us know your thoughts on this story in the comments section.
