What's your favorite fruit?
Berries are among the most common types of fruit and there are many unexpected fruits which technically belong to this family. Berries are categorized as any fleshy fruit that grows from a single flower and don’t bear a stone pit. This means that tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers and yes, bananas are technically berries. Bananas are one of the most abundant fruits on the planet, growing in tropical regions such as South America, Central America, Australia, India and Africa. They can be found in over 150 countries and there are over 1,000 varieties of bananas found worldwide.
One of the most common types of bananas is the Cavendish, which was named after William Cavendish, the 6th Duke of Devonshire. From 1998 to 2000, the Cavendish accounted for 47% of the world’s global banana population. Prior to the 1960s, the Gros Michael was the world’s most popular type of banana, however it was wiped out by the Panama disease.
In the United States, the leading distributor of bananas is Chiquita, which was founded in 1899. The company mascot, Miss Chiquita was created by cartoonist Dik Browne in 1944. The brand began creating peel-off stickers featuring their mascot in 1963 and to this day, each sticker is placed by hand to avoid bruising the fruit.
