Are you feeling corny?
Today, we’re talking corn, and no, we’re not referring to the nu metal band. Corn, also known as maize, was first domesticated over 10,000 years ago. It’s a cereal grain that was initially consumed by indigenous groups in Southern Mexico. Since then, corn has become a staple food for many cultures worldwide, with total production surpassing both rice and wheat. Besides its role in human consumption, corn is crucial for corn ethanol production, animal feed, and various corn-derived products like corn starch and corn syrup. The versatility and historical significance of corn have even inspired some to celebrate it through corn tattoos, marking its cultural and agricultural importance in a permanent and artistic way.
There are six major types of corn and they are dent corn (also known as field corn), flint corn, pod corn (also known as wild maize), popcorn, flour corn and sweet corn. Sweet corn is what is primarily made for human consumption, while dent corn is often used for animal feed.
When it comes to popular culture, one of the best examples of corn popping up is in the 1984 film “Children of the Corn.” This film is based on Stephen King’s 1977 short story of the name name and follows a small Nebraska town surrounded by cornfields. The antagonist of the film is a 12-year-old named Isaac Croner who brings the town’s children into the cornfields and indoctrinates them into a cult that worships a deity referred to as “He Who Walks Behind the Rows.” This then leads Isaac and the children to murder all the adults in the town.
The film spawned a successful film franchise with a staggering nine sequels and a 2009 remake. The most recent film, a 2020 prequel, was a colossal flop. The budget for the film was $30 million, however it only raked in $1,025 after being released in two theaters in Sarasota, Florida.
