75 Adorable Dachshund Tattoos
What's your favorite dog breed?
According to the American Kennel Club, there are 190 officially recognized dog breeds. And one of our favorites is the dachshund. The dachshund originates in Germany and its name translates to badger dog. But, because of their long bodies and short legs, dachshunds are frequently referred to as wiener dogs or sausage dogs. Dachshunds are recognized for their long, skinny bodies, short stubby legs and disproportionately large feet.
The dachshund can come in three coat varieties—short, long and wire. Wire-coated dachshunds are the least common coat type in the United States, however, it’s the most common coat type in Germany. Dachshunds come in a variety of colors and patterns, with the most common color being red. Dachshunds in the same litter can have different color patterns depending on the genetic makeup of the parents. The American Kennel Club has deemed the piebald and double merle color patterns to be nonstandard.
Dachshunds are a popular dog breed among celebrities and public figures. Presidents John F. Kennedy and Grover Cleveland had dachshunds. Artists Pablo Picasso, David Hockney and Andy Warhol also owned dachshunds during their lifetimes. And actors Jack Black, Josh Duhamel and Kirsten Dunst have also had the breed.
