In doing my research on ignorant style tattoos, I came across a video by a content creator called Struthless. He did a deep dive on the style, breaking down its origins, how it gained popularity amongst millions of collectors and what it means to tattooing today. What really stuck with me was a point he made about rebellion and the absurdism psychological theory. Struthless argues that as tattooing has become more mainstream, it’s lost some of its grit and cache. Therefore, in rebellion to what the tattoo industry deems to be “good art,” ignorant style has gained prominence. Because simply getting a tattoo is no longer an act of cultural defiance, ignorant style enthusiasts have found a new way of laughing in the face of permanence.
