Netflix Fame Puts Face Tattooed Convict Back in Prison
Megan 'Monster' Hawkins learns its better to be anonymous than infamous
Following the success of shows like Orange is the New Black and Wentworth Prison, Netflix debuted a documentary series called Jailbirds in 2019. The show follows inmates at the Sacramento County Jail and documents their daily interactions—from communicating through the plumbing system to getting creative with the commissary.
One of the show’s biggest breakout stars is 28-year-old Megan Hawkins, better known as Monster. In the show, she was reaching the end of her 180 day sentence after being incarcerated for grand theft auto, transportation of narcotics, possession of a controlled substance, check fraud, and committing a felony while on bail.
Prior to the premiere of the show, Hawkins was a free woman. However, the notoriety of the series put her back in the slammer, after being recognized by the Elk Grove police department. She was busted for attempting to open a checking and savings account with an ID that didn’t belong to her and was taken back to the Sacramento Jail. Looks like online fame has its consequences!
