Neil Peart, Drummer of Prog-Rock Legends Rush, Passes Away at 67
Peart passed way after a lengthy battle with brain cancer
Neil Peart, drummer and lyricist of the legendary progressive rock band Rush, passed away on January 7 in Santa Monica, California. Peart, who had retired from professional drumming, had been battling brain cancer for the last couple of years.
Known for his precise drumming and incredible stamina, Peart was renowned among drummers as a true original. Early in his career, Peart was heavily influenced by hard rock, but as time wore on he brought in jazz and swing influences that made his work stand out.
Not only was Peart the drummer for Rush, but he also was the primary lyricist. Many of his lyrics have literary inspiration, including from the genres of science fiction and fantasy. His lyrics also often referenced his political beliefs which leaned towards libertarianism.
In his time, Peart influenced an entire generation of drummers. He will be missed greatly.
As one of the most beloved bands of all time, you won’t be surprised to learn that there are tons of people with Rush tattoos. You’ll find a gallery of them below.
