75 Perfect Potion Bottle Tattoos

Pick your poison.

Potions have been prominent in stories about magic and magical beings for centuries. We’ve seen potions portrayed as both positive and negative in popular culture, especially when it comes to the Harry Potter franchise. In the wizarding world of Harry Potter, potions play a big role in the storyline throughout the seven books and eight films. Potions is one of the major classes at Hogwarts and for the majority of the series, it’s taught by Professor Severus Snape—one of Harry’s antagonists. In the films, Snape is portrayed by the late Alan Rickman and is arguably one of the series most beloved characters. Many potions were created to add to the fantasy of the wizarding world, notably Amortentia, Felix Felicis and Polyjuice potion.

Amortentia is a powerful love potion first introduced in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” This potion is brought about during Harry, Ron and Hermione’s potion class, which is taught by Professor Slughorn after Snape takes on the role of Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. The potion is known to have a pearly sheen and smells different to each person, depending on their tastes. This potion is used in a box office chocolates that were intended to be given to Harry by a fellow student, Romilda Vane. However, Ron instead consumes the chocolates and causes a near fatal reaction.

Another potion that was introduced during “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” was Felix Felicis. Felix Felicis, also known as liquid luck, gives the user temporary good luck after consumed. The potions students compete for a vial of Felix Felicis in Slughorn’s class, which Harry wins using instructions crafted by the Half-Blood Prince. Harry makes Ron believe he put the potion into his drink to give him confidence, however, Harry instead uses it to gain knowledge about horcruxes from Slughorn and later to protect himself and his friends from Death Eaters.

Lastly, one of the most widely recognized potions in the wizarding world is Polyjuice Potion. Polyjuice Potion is introduced in the second book, “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” and is a potion that allows the user to temporarily transform into different people. Harry and Ron use this potion to transform into Crab and Goyle, the close friends of Slytherin student Draco Malfoy, to determine whether or not Draco is the heir of Slytherin. Hermione attempts to transform into a fellow Slytherin student, however, the hair she retrieved was instead from a cat. Polyjuice potion was also used by Barty Crouch Jr. to transform into Professor Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” We last see Polyjuice potion used several times during the last book, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” first with members of the Order of the Phoenix transforming into Harry Potter to transport Harry to the burrow, then by the trio to retrieve a horcrux from Dolores Umbridge at the Ministry of Magic and last by Hermione to transform into Bellatrix Lestrange to retrieve a horcrux from the Lestrange family vault.

In honor of all the magical potions of the wizarding world and otherwise, take a peek at 75 of our favorite potion tattoos from talented tattoo artists around the world. Then let us know your favorite potion from the wizarding world in the comments section on social media.
