Tile Tattoos

Tiles can adorn the walls of ancient buildings, as well as our skin

We love geometric tattoos over here, but there’s one kind in particular that can tell an elaborate story within just a small square. We’re talking tiles—yes, even the ones lining your bathroom floor. But aside from being a surface that has grounded you as you puked, tiles have a rich history and decorate some of the most famous pieces of architecture in the world.

Tiles have been around since ancient times, being used both as decorative art and protection for buildings in Mesopotamia, Persepolis and Egypt in 4000-3000 B.C. Manufacturers in ancient Mesopotamia enhanced tile technology by firing clay at high temperatures to make durable tile bricks, as well as inventing glaze to make them water-impermeable. Perhaps one of the most notable buildings with immaculate tilework is the Ishtar Gate of Babylon, composed of royal blue tiles and striking gold figures such as lions, dragons, and gods and goddesses of Babylon.

There is a vast array of tiles that can be marveled at today. Zellige tiles, or handcrafted clay tiles originating in 10th century Morocco, were inspired by Roman and Byzantine mosaics. Each piece varies in tone, shine, shape and glaze, and is a popular choice for many modern designers. Azulejos are Spanish and Portuguese ceramic tiles produced from the 14th century onward, and exhibit ornate designs with a heavy affinity for blue tones, which can be found in many beautiful corners of Lisbon.

Not only can we find tiles lining the interiors and exteriors of prominent buildings, but they can be found right in your own home. Tiles are primarily used in bathrooms and kitchens because they’re easy to clean, non-porous when glazed and mold resistant. They can be sleek and monochrome, but they can also be embellished with opulent motifs and vibrant hues.

Tiles are recognizable for their intricate and antique look, as well as their satisfying symmetry. Thus, they prove to be ideal candidates for those in the market for an elegant tattoo. A tile pattern is not only captivating, but can carry with it centuries’ worth of history and culture—or even just remind you of the adorable pattern above your mom’s kitchen stove. Whichever the case, these tile tattoos are the perfect combination of ornamental and sentimental.
