This year, Disney is releasing a staggering 6 films. These films range from a live-action remake to animated sequels, each tying back to a cult classic. Dumbo—March 29th
In 1941, Walt Disney debuted the animated film Dumbo, which went on to win Best Scoring of a Musical Picture at that year’s Academy Awards. Almost 80 years later, everyone’s favorite flying elephant is back on the big screen for a live action feature. The 2019 film is directed by Tim Burton and stars A-list actors Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, and Danny Devito.
Aladdin—May 24th
In 1992, the animated feature film Aladdin hit theaters and won Academy Awards in the Best Original Score and Best Original Song categories. The film famously featured the voice of Robin Williams at the Genie and for the 2019 live-action remake, Will Smith will be taking on the role. The 2019 film is directed by Guy Ritchie and stars newcomers Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, and Marwan Kenzari.
Toy Story 4—June 21st
Nine years after debuting Toy Story 3, which many fans believed would be the last film in the franchise, Disney is releasing a fourth Toy Story film. Toy Story 4 is the feature film directorial debut for Josh Cooley, who worked as a storyboard artist for The Incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille, and Up. The film stars familiar faces Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as Woody and Buzz, while introducing Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele to the cast.
The Lion King—July 19th
The Lion King is one of the most prolific Disney feature films of all time, spawning a number of sequels and an extremely successful Broadway musical. In 2019, a photorealistic computer animated remake hits theaters and the cast list went viral upon its release. Donald Glover, Chiwetel Ejiofor, James Earle Jones, Beyoncé, Billy Eichner, Seth Rogan, and John Oliver are among the A-listers appearing in 2019’s version of The Lion King.
Frozen 2—November 22nd
Following the success of 2013’s Frozen, Disney is putting out a sequel this year. The sequel is directed once again by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck and stars Hollywood heavyweights Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel.
Star Wars: Episode IX—December 20th
Following the events of The Last Jedi, Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters at the tail end of 2019. Directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Kathleen Kennedy, the third film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. The 2019 film star familiar faces Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, and John Boyega while introducing actress Keri Russell to the cast.
