Why This Man Has 40,000 Identical Tattoos

You won't believe the meaning behind this man's 40,000 tattoos

Meet Alfredo Meschi, a 51-year-old activist from Italy. He’s ornamented with 40,000 identical X tattoos for one inspiring reason—to illustrate the number of animals killed every second.

Meschi explained his reasoning for this permanent body art statement to Cafébabel, sharing:

“Why do I have 40,000 tattoos? Because 40,000 non-human animals are slaughtered in the world every second, just to satisfy our appetites.”

It’s as if our awareness of injustice, compassion, and empathy is a tap that gets turned on and off,” he said. “And every second, there are no fewer than 40,000 non-human animals killed for our benefit. I wanted to capture that, preserve it forever on my skin – that awareness of that number, every second.”

In addition to using his body as a prop for political performance, Meschi also tours the world sharing his message as an anti-speciesist activist in art galleries and museums—including posing nude in a cow mask at the Kuenstlerhaus Dortmund art gallery in Germany.

“Vegan is the beginning and the end of vegetarian. Milk is murder.” This is the title of the challenging performance that I did as the opening event of “I wanna be your dog II” at Dortmund Kunstlerhaus. A very unique, deep and interesting exploration about Contemporary Art and Animal Liberation, curated by Barbara Koch and Marco Wittkowski. I do believe that artivism can be a powerful way to raise awareness…let’s do it!! @plantbasednews @livekindlyco @vegancommunity #iwannabeyourdogii #vegancommunity #ditchdairy #veganlove #plantbasednews #livekindlyco #antispeciesism #veganactivist #animalliberation #performanceart #artivist #artivism #veganartist #veganart #contemporaryart #projectx #alfredomeschi #alfredomschix
