These Werewolf Tattoos Will Make You Howl at the Moon
What's your favorite werewolf movie?
Werewolves are one of the most frequently depicted monsters in television, film and literature—with stories spanning from horror to comedy to romance. Their story goes back centuries, as werewolf folklore gained prominence during the European medieval period. Lore around werewolves spread like wildfire throughout the New World during colonization and soon, suspected werewolves were persecuted in the witch-hunts. Following the witch-trials, werewolves became a popular subject of Gothic literature, such as 1831’s “The Man-Wolf,” 1846’s “A Story of a Weir-Wolf” and 1857’s “The Wolf Leader.” However, it was the 20th century where the modern werewolf came into play and the world of horror was never the same.
During the early 20th century, classic monsters had their time in the spotlight and the modern werewolf was created through the 1913 silent film “The Werewolf,” the 1933 novel “The Werewolf in Paris” and the acclaimed horror classics, 1935’s “Werewolf in London” and 1941’s “The Wolf Man.” The werewolf became a staple of horror cinema during this time and its lore has only grown over time. Today, we see werewolves throughout cinema and they’ve appeared in some of the biggest film franchises in history, including Harry Potter, “Underworld” and “Twilight.”
