Badass Misfits Tattoos

In the annals of rock history, the Misfits have found a remarkable niche. They were never overly skilled (Editor’s Note: three of the first five songs I learned to play on bass were Misfits songs), they never had an album chart higher than 70th and the original lineup broke up during Reagan’s first term. Yet, they are undeniably one of the most important punk bands of all time. 

Even though the Misfits are so easy to make fun of—the devil locks, the ghoulish iconography, Danzig’s very being—they are just as easy to fall in love with. Most fans, including this guy, find joy in doing both. Take the lyrics from their iconic song, “We Are 138.” They are… dumb. The song is ridiculously vague, doesn’t really have a point and, overall, they make a good argument against the idiom “less is more.” That being said, that song fucking rocks. I’ll scream along to it every single time I hear it. I even get a little surge of excitement when I look at the clock and notice that the time is 1:38. It’s so silly, but in many ways, that’s what makes the Misfits so great. It’s as if all of us— with the possible exception of Glenn Danzig—are in on the joke.

This allure helps explain why there are so many tattoos of the Crimson Ghost, the Misfits unforgettable logo. It also doesn’t hurt that the logo is pretty fucking cool.
