17 Shocking, Spooky and Stupendous ‘The Invisible Man’ Tattoos

In 1897, the same year Bram Stoker published “Dracula,” science fiction author H.G. Wells debuted his novel “The Invisible Man.” In the book, the protagonist Griffin is an optics scientist who invents a way to make himself invisible but is unable to turn himself back. He proceeds to go on a spree of violence throughout the series, solidifying himself as a horror icon and Wells as the father of science fiction.

During the Pre-Code era of Hollywood, “The Invisible Man” was introduced on the big screen in 1933. The film starred British actor Claude Rains in his film debut, who later went on to appear in “The Adventures of Robin Hood,” “The Wolf Man,” “Casablanca,” and “Lawrence of Arabia.” The film was known for its special effects, which were ground breaking at the time. In order to appear invisible, Rains wore a black velvet suit in front of a black velvet background and wires were used to mimic his movements. In 1940, the film earned a sequel, “The Invisible Man Returns,” with American actor Vincent Price playing a new invisible man. “The Invisible Woman” hit theaters that same year, a science fiction comedy starring Virginia Bruce. Throughout the next decade, there were a number of other sequels that took inspiration from Wells’ novel, including “Invisible Agent,” “The Invisible Man’s Revenge,” “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein,” and “Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man.”

Over a hundred and twenty years after Wells first published his history making novel, “The Invisible Man” is back on the big screen. This time, the story follows a woman (played by Elizabeth Moss) who is stuck in an abusive relationship with a wealthy and brilliant optics scientist. Her boyfriend commits suicide, however, the woman believes he’s found a way to become invisible and is stalking her. In addition to Moss, the film features performances by Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid, Harriet Dyer and Michael Dorman. The film has received mostly positive reviews from critics and a spin-off, “The Invisible Woman,” is already in the works and set to star Elizabeth Banks.
