Today’s skull of the day is this wicked piece by Jesse Rix! Rix is best known for his work in realism. He can bring to life an incredible and original tattoo whether it be in color or black and grey. Many of his pieces feature cool surrealistic optical illusions that are instantly recognizable as one of his own. Today’s tattoo is equally as trippy as some of his more Dali-inspired work, but done on a much more subtle level. Skulls are such iconic images in tattoos, but this piece makes the skull the accent to the piece rather than the focus. Instead Rix made the focus the half empty bottle. When viewed closely the bottle then highlights the skull trapped inside. We love the cool contrast of the empty glass against the warm hues of the liquid drowning this skeletal countenance. What really makes this piece stand out, however, is Rix’s decision to make a tattoo that would have looked great in full realism and add some New School qualities to it, thus boosting the piece’s whimsy and originality.
