Today’s tattoo of the day is this excellent hand piece by Phil Wilkinson. Wilkinson is best known for his fun mash ups of traditional, illustrative and sketch work styles. Currently based at One Day Gallery in Manchester, England, Wilkinson has surprisingly only been tattooing for just under five years and has been blowing us away ever since.
Take a look at today’s pick. Like all of Wilkinson’s pieces, his color saturation is always on point, even when tattooing a difficult area like the hand. We love the blue and turquoise background hues used for this wolf piece, especially since they bring out the blue and green tones found within the wolf’s fur. The bold outlines on this piece read like more of a traditional style, however, the shading and heavy detailing give off a more illustrative vibe, thus making the piece instantly recognizable as one of Wilkinson’s.
The hand is a super tricky area to tattoo, but Wilkinson knocks this piece out of the park regardless. One of the coolest factors is the placement of the wolf’s jaw on the client’s hand. By lining it up with the space between the index finger and the thumb, the natural movement of the wearer’s hand will also reflect the opening and closing of the wolf’s jaw. Cool effect, right?
